THE VERSE
And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ."~Mark 8:29
THE THOUGHT
"Who do you say that I am?" Just as there were many answers to Jesus' question back then-- maybe he is John the Baptist, or maybe or Elijah, or one of the prophets-- there are even more answers to that question today. With this age's individualistic belief systems and shopping-mall style spirituality and postmodern fondness for relativism and ambiguity, it seems that every person has a different answer to Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am?"But lest we shrug this confusion off as a harmless byproduct of our times, or throw up our hands in despair, we must recognize the seriousness of Jesus' question. It is the question whose answer will determine each person's eternal destiny. It is the question whose correct answer, Jesus says, can only be revealed by the Holy Spirit opening spiritually blind eyes. In other words, to believe the correct answer is to be saved. There is nothing more important than the answer to this question, which is why Peter's confession is the rock upon which the entire church of Jesus Christ is built, against which not even the gates of hell can prevail.
"Who do you say that I am?" Peter's answer is the statement that saves: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Every day, this question is asked of us as we live our lives before an unbelieving world, and it will be asked of us on that final judgment day. So therefore, who do you say that He is?
THE PRAYER
Jesus, I confess and accept and believe and rejoice and proclaim that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. I believe this wonderful reality, but help my wayward and unbelieving heart. I believe this glorious truth, but keep me humble and aware that only You can open my eyes to see and savor the reality of who You are. Help me, by my life and witness and words, to share the news of who You are with the world that desperately needs to hear.EXTENDED READING
