THE VERSE
I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant.~Genesis 32:10
THE THOUGHT
Jacob’s statement here in Genesis 32 is a beautiful gospel testimony, and shows how far he has come since the days of tricking his father and stealing his brother's birthright. Once a cunning schemer and conman, Jacob now confessed his bankruptcy and utter dependence on the mercy of God. He left his father's camp fleeing for his life before a vengeful brother, but now he returns humbly, seeking the favor of both his brother and his God. What a dramatic change in the life of Jacob!Do you have the same perspective as Jacob? One of the effects of God's grace is to cultivate Gospel-centered humility. In light of God's continued blessing and presence and faithfulness in your life, can you say with David, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?" In light of Calvary, in light of God's blinding holiness, in light of your sin, can you say with the people in Jesus' parable, "We are unworthy servants?" In light of the Gospel, ask God for a deeper grasp of your unworthiness, so that you can love much, seeing that you have been forgiven much.
THE PRAYER
Lord, I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that You have shown to Your servant. I am sin and dust and ashes; who am I, that You would look upon me with love and favor, when I have scorned Your glory and dishonored Your name? I am not worthy to be in Your presence, to experience Your blessing, to know Your favor, and yet through the abundance of Your steadfast mercy I can approach the throne of grace with confidence! Thank you, Lord, for Your great love to such as I.EXTENDED READING
