December 22- John 18:40

THE VERSE

"You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world- to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."
~John 18:40

THE THOUGHT

For the next few days leading up to Christmas, we will be examining what the Bible says about "the reason for the season." Why did Jesus come as an infant on that night in Bethlehem? Why Christmas?

Jesus Himself gives us one answer in His trial before Pilate. Pilate, like so many at the time and so many today, misunderstood Jesus' mission, assuming that Jesus had a political, earthly agenda. Jesus corrected him, pointing Pilate to one of the reasons for the incarnation: "For this purpose I was born- to bear witness to the truth." Christmas is the joyful news that in the midst of a world of darkness and deception, the light of truth has broken in. The prince of darkness has been dethroned by the baby in the manger, the prince of peace and the king of truth. This is the reason for the season: Jesus came into the world to bear witness to the truth.

This Christmas, amidst all the decorations and celebrations, are you listening to His voice? It's easy, in all of the commotion of Christmas, to miss the still small voice of the Savior, who still speaks to us through His Word and Spirit. Take time to slow down and encounter the King of truth again today.

THE PRAYER

Jesus, You are the King of truth, and Your coming exposes once again my need for a Savior. The truth of the gospel is a truth that is sometimes hard to swallow: the truth that I cannot rescue myself, but that I need a Rescuer. Thank you for being my Savior, and for setting me free to know and love the truth that You proclaim.

THE QUOTE

“It is better to be divided by truth than to be united in error. It is better to speak the truth that hurts, and then heals, than falsehood that comforts, then kills. It is better to be hated for telling the truth than to be loved for telling a lie.” ~Adrian Rogers
