THE VERSE
The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.~Hebrews 1:3
THE THOUGHT
This verse is absolutely shocking. It tells us that the Gospel is a bizarre act of divine debasement and grace that goes beyond our ability to comprehend. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus Christ as the fully divine, eternal, omnipotent God, the Yahweh of the Old Testament, God the Son. He is the radiance of the Father's glory, and He sustains the entire universe by the sheer power of His word and will. The supremacy of Christ shines forth in this verse; He is the absolute, utter reality with which everyone must reckon. He is the God who is there, and you only exist because He wills it to be so.All of this is what makes the next sentence so shocking. God the Son, the Holy of Israel, the Lord God Almighty, El Shaddai, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, "provided purification of sins." Do you feel the outrage of this statement? Jesus Christ, eternally begotten from the Father, completely without sin, stooped from His eternal throne to provide ransom for those rebelling against His supreme authority and worth. This is astronomical, infinite grace: God the Son DYING for treacherous rebels like us. The Sustainer of all things coming to pursue sinners with loving-kindness. The Creator wooing creation. This is the astonishing glory of the Gospel.
THE PRAYER
Lord God Almighty, I am awestruck by Your grace. Why would You, the omnipotent, eternal Creator, die for someone like me? Thank you for love, Jesus, for leaving heaven in order to purchase me for heaven. I love the gift of life that You give me, and I love Your glory and I love You.EXTENDED READING
