October 6- Romans 8:34

THE VERSE

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died-- more than that, who was raised-- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
~Romans 8:34

THE THOUGHT

The phrase "What would Jesus do?" is a popular slogan that aptly calls believers to walk in the footsteps of their Lord, extending the same mercy and liberating grace and holiness that Jesus demonstrated while on earth. This really is a helpful and practical question to ask, and despite the cliche that WWJD has become, it can be a valuable tool to growing in sanctification and ministry.

But we shouldn't stop there. The question, "What would Jesus do?" seems to assume that He is gone, and it's our job to keep His life and ministry going. Nothing could be father from the truth. Jesus Christ is not gone, He is not dead; He is alive and well and working at this very moment. The question to ask is not just, "What would Jesus do?" but "What is Jesus doing?"

He is turning enemies into friends. He is reconciling rebels and advancing His kingdom. He is reigning until every enemy is put under His feet. He is invading hearts with an all-conquering love. His is speaking through His Spirit. He is guiding all of history towards the end of His own glory. In today's verse, we see one precious answer to the question, "What is Jesus doing?" He is interceding for His own, pleading our cause, pointing to the wounds in His hands, and winning for us mercies that are new every morning.

By all means, ask yourself the question, "What would Jesus do?" and live accordingly. But let your service be informed by a resurrection faith that always asks the question, "What is Jesus doing?"

THE PRAYER

Jesus, Help me to remember, as I live my life and strive to honor You, that You are alive and reigning at this moment. Give me a renewed sense of the reality of Your resurrection, that I may stand amazed once more at Your great power and love. I praise You for Your work of intercession on my behalf. Thank you for always representing me before the Father's throne, for being my Advocate and Savior each day.

THE QUOTE

"Christianity is a religion you could never have guessed. If it offered us just the kind of universe we'd always expected, I'd feel we were just making it up. But, in fact, it's not the sort of thing anyone would have made up. It has just that queer twist about it that real things have." ~C.S. Lewis
