August 30- Revelation 20:12

THE VERSE

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
~Revelation 20:12

THE THOUGHT

This is truly a fearful scene. At the end of the age, all the dead, both great and small, will stand before the throne, and books recording what each of them had done will be opened. If you know anything about your heart, you know that this scene will certainly be your undoing. If God keeps a record of sins, who can stand? Our hearts are shot through with wickedness and idolatry and selfishness and pride and anger and lust and covetousness-- all of which are a grievous insult against a holy God. The first entry from those books will be enough to condemn us for eternity.

But fortunately for us, the scene does not end there. "Then another book was opened, which is the book of life." The dead are judged by what was written in the other books, but praise God, there is hope, for there is another book! Our only hope to escape the just condemnation of the other books is to have our name found here. I will not be judged according to what I have done, because my name is written in the book of life. Is yours?

Praise God, there is another book!

THE PRAYER

Dear God, Only amazing grace could save a wretch like me. In spite of all I have done against You, somehow You have still chosen to set Your love on me, to call me and save me and justify me and make me holy. I deserve to have my name blotted out of the book of life, and yet You have blotted out my sins instead. Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and forgiving sins? Great are You, Lord!
