August 19- Jeremiah 2:5

THE VERSE

Thus says the LORD: “What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless.”
~Jeremiah 2:5

THE THOUGHT

You’ve heard it said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Well, it’s also true that what your treasure is, that your heart will become. Over and over again, God repeats this in Scripture: when you go after worthlessness, you become worthless. When you go after things that are false, you become false. This is a scary reality to be faced with because as sinners, we love many worthless things. How often does your heart turn almost irresistibly towards the love of money, or power, or lust, or laziness, or apathy? We are much more content sitting in front of a TV than we are meditating on God’s word. We pursue worthlessness, and become worthless.

But there is good news on the flip-side is that the same truth—you become what your treasure is—works the opposite way too. “We all, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His likeness, from one degree of glory to the next.” “When we see Him, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” The more we set our hearts on Jesus, the more we seek the things that are above, the more we will be transformed into His likeness. If you want to become more like Jesus in your daily life, the recipe for transformation is simple: treasure Him.

THE PRAYER

Lord, Help me to treasure You more. You are infinitely worthy of all my affection, all my love, all my desire. Tear my heart away from worthless things that distract me from the highest joy of knowing You and making You known.
