THE VERSE
And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
~Philippians 1:6
THE THOUGHT
I love this promise. Far too often, indwelling sin seems so strong, the fight for holiness seems so hard, and heaven seems so far away. But what a promise this is, for times of discouragement! Whether you are discouraged by a loved one’s long-drawn out struggle with sin or are simply weary of doing good, this promise stands as God’s beacon of hope for you. For everyone in Christ Jesus, this is God’s unshakeable, unchangeable oath: He never leaves anything incomplete. If His Spirit has begun the good work of salvation in your heart, God has pledged all the resources of His omnipotence to carrying that work through all the way to glory.
So take heart, weary Christian! Hear your Savior say to you, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” So don’t grow weary of doing good, but keep pursuing Him, knowing that He will bring His good work in you to completion.
THE PRAYER
Lord, All my hope for the future lies in Your sovereign, mighty hold on me. I know that if my salvation were dependent on my perseverance, I would fall away, for I could never be strong enough on my own to keep walking all the way to heaven. But with Your Spirit in my heart and Your promises in my mind, I know that I will make it to glory, with You leading me all the way.
